It’s good to have honey bees buzzing around in your garden!  They pollinate the plants, performing a vital function. 

Of course, you’ve probably heard there are problems with the honey bee population right now.  But honey bees are not the only bees in trouble. Other types of bees are also in decline. The use of pesticides known to be deadly to bees has been linked to the dangerous decline in pollinator populations.  Bees are one of the important players in the eco system. 

Other honey bee facts!  Nectar is a bees main source of energy. Pollen provides the proteins and fats they need. Beneficial predator insects need nectar and pollen when the pests they feed on are not available.

* All honeybees are social and cooperative insects.
* Hives are generally divided into three types of bees: workers, queen, and drones.
* Average life span in the wild is up to 5 years.
* A group of honey bees is called a colony or swarm.

How To Get Them In Your Garden

When planning what flowers you want to beautify your garden and help the bees and other beneficial insects, choose those that produce the most pollen and nectar.  When you help the bees and other beneficial insects, you help yourself as well. Studies have shown that plants — even self pollinating plants — produce more fruit after being visited by the bees.
