If you’re looking for a great gardening DIY project, aquaponics might interest you.  It has all the elements of a great DIY project.  For one thing, it’s not so hard it seems like an impossible task.  In fact, building your own aquaponics system should be quite with the capabilitiess of people interested in do-it-yourself building projects.

Then there’s the fact DIY Aquaponics is a really useful project!   Once you have set up the system, it’s a great way to produce food.  It’s easier and more productive than traditional soil gardening.

And last but not least, it’s got that “cool” factor, and it’s lots of fun!

How Does DIY Aquaponics Work?

You can make a small indoor system, or one to use outside.  It doesn’t matter if it’s a small unit or a big commercial unit, the principles are the same.  It combines aquaculture, the raising of aquatic animals, with hydropoinics, which is cultivating plants in water.  Combing the two provides a really effective system that keeps both fish and plants healthy and growing when done correctly.

This system is helped by nitrification, or the aerobic conversion of toxic ammonia into nitrates.  In fact, this in one of the most important parts of a DIY Aquaponics system since it reduces the toxicity of the water and makes it easier for the plants to take up the nitrogenous compounds.  The ideas is to keep a healthy population growing of Nitrosomonas bacteria that convert ammonia into nitrites, which the plants can use.

The bacteria forms a biofilm on all solid surfaces of the system in contact with the water, including the submerged roots of the vegetables.

More About DIY Aquaponics

There are several advantages of DIY Aquaponics.  First off, just using an aquaponic system has several plant growing advantages, including water conservation, automatic organic fertilization of plants, and being able to grow food without land.

The disadvantages are the initial expenses for housing, tank, plumbing, pumps, and grow beds.  However you should soon be growing a lot of healthy food, helping to defray the expenses.
